About SBA The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) was officially established in 1953, but its philosophy and mission began to take shape years earlier in a number of predecessor agencies, largely as a response to the pressures of the Great Depression and World War II. SBA provides financial, technical and management assistance to help Americans start, run, and grow their businesses. SBA is the nation's largest single financial backer of small businesses. Last year, the SBA offered management and technical assistance to more than one million small business owners. The SBA also plays a major role in the government's disaster relief efforts by making low-interest recovery loans to both homeowners and businesses. The 503 Loan Program, the 504's predecessor, was created in October 1980 in Section 503 of the Small Business Investment Act. Since it's inception, over 40,000 loans have been financed through the 503/504 Loan Programs. In these loans, over $20 billion has been loaned to small businesses, resulting in the creation or retention of over 1 million jobs.
